IELTS evaluates one’s ability to comprehend, analyze, express in writing, and communicate in English. Band ratings are assigned for proficiency in each language skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) on a scale ranging from 0 to 9.

Among these skills, the speaking module holds particular significance in the IELTS assessment. It involves a crucial one-on-one interview with an examiner. While the examiner assesses the candidate in real-time, the entire speaking session is also recorded. This recording serves the dual purpose of monitoring and allows for re-evaluation in case of an appeal against the assigned band score.

The IELTS system is continually refined with invaluable input from subject matter experts worldwide. Teams of experts contribute from diverse locations such as the United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and other English-speaking nations.

IELTS test structure

All candidates aspire to successfully navigate through the four essential modules—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—in order to attain a band rating, as authenticated by the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF). While all candidates engage in the identical Listening and Speaking Modules, the content of the Reading and Writing Modules varies, contingent upon whether the candidate opts for the Academic or General Training versions of the test.

Listening

The listening module is composed of four distinct sections, each commencing with a concise introduction that provides applicants with information about the scenario and the audio system. Following this, candidates are given a brief moment to preview the questions. Notably, the first three sections incorporate a pause in the middle, affording applicants an opportunity to review the remaining questions. It's crucial to note that each section is played only once.

Reading

In the academic module, the examination comprises three sections, each accompanied by three texts, typically followed by 13 or 14 questions, totaling 40 questions overall. Similarly, the general test includes three sections, but with shorter texts, allowing for up to five texts to be analyzed.

Writing

This consists of sections with the segment taking the form of an essay.

Speaking

The speaking test is divided into three sections. In the initial segment, candidates engage in an interview where they discuss their hobbies, interests, reasons for taking the IELTS examination, and other general topics like clothing, leisure activities, computers, the internet, or family. The second phase involves candidates receiving a topic card, having one minute to prepare, and then delivering a speech on the given subject. The third and final section entails a dialogue between the examiner and the candidate, typically centered around questions related to the chosen topic.

Duration

The entire test duration spans approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, encompassing the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking modules.

Listening Module (40 minutes): The Listening module is divided into two segments, taking up a total of 40 minutes. In the initial 30 minutes, a centrally administered recording is played. Following this, an additional 10 minutes are allotted for transferring answers to the OMR answer sheet.

Reading Module (60 minutes): The Reading module requires a dedicated 60 minutes for completion.

Writing Module (60 minutes): Similar to the Reading module, the Writing module also requires 60 minutes to finish.

Speaking Module (10-14 minutes): The Speaking module, the final component of the test, spans a duration of 10 to 14 minutes.
